Callaway Golf Staff Professional Paul Lawrie Wins the Wales Open With Big Bertha C4 Driver, HX Ball and Odyssey White Hot ``2-Ball'' Putter
CARLSBAD, Calif., Aug 12, 2002 (BW SportsWire) -- Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Paul Lawrie warmed up for this week's PGA Championship with a resounding victory yesterday at the Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open. Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion, won by an impressive five-stroke margin using the Company's Big Bertha C4(TM) Driver, HX(R) golf ball and Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) "2-Ball" Putter. Lawrie's win yesterday was one of three for players using Callaway Golf(R) balls, which have now been used to win 38 events across the world's six major professional tours combined this year.
Lawrie finished second at the Wales Open last year, and cited his Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter as a key to the victory this time around. "It was nice to come back and win this time," said Lawrie, who won the Dunhill Links Championship last fall in the first event he played using the Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putter. "I played well last year and didn't win, as I didn't putt well. This time I putted a lot better. The 65 I shot in the second round (taking only 25 putts) was the key. My ball-striking has been fantastic, and I will go to the U.S. and try my best at the PGA Championship. I'm looking forward to going there with my game in good shape." Lawrie's victory is the 14th win for Odyssey White Hot "2-Ball" Putters across the world's six major professional tours this year, and Odyssey Putters leads all putter brands in wins (56) and usage (34.9 percent) across the world's six major professional tours combined.
Lawrie played exceptionally well from tee to green at Celtic Manor Resort despite difficult weather conditions. The advanced aerodynamic performance of the HX Red golf ball helped Lawrie average 301 yards in driving distance while hitting 78.6 percent of the fairways, and he hit 70.8 percent of the greens in regulation through wind and rain. In all, Lawrie used 11 Callaway Golf clubs at the event, including a Big Bertha(R) 2-iron and a set of Steelhead(TM) X-14(R) Pro Series Irons. Lawrie has won each of the last two weeks, including his victory at the Scottish Professional Match Play event two weeks ago.
Callaway Golf balls were also used to win two other tour events yesterday. Callaway Golf Ball Staff Professional Marco Dawson won the Buy.com LaSalle Bank Open using the HX Red golf ball. Dawson's three-stroke victory was his first Buy.com Tour triumph. The winner used his Big Bertha Hawk Eye(R) VFT(R) Pro Series Titanium Driver and the HX Red ball to average 299.9 yards in driving distance at Kemper Lakes. Meanwhile, Callaway Golf Ball Staff Professional Christian Pena birdied the first extra hole to win the Sun-Chlorella Classic in a three-way playoff. Pena used the CTU 30(R) Red ball to shot four rounds in the 60s and finish at 19-under-par 269, earning his first Japan Golf Tour victory. Callaway Golf balls have now been used to win nine of the 16 events played on the Japan Golf Tour this year.
