CARLSBAD, CA., January 15, 2001 – Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Mark McNulty won the South African Masters yesterday using the Callaway Golf “Rule 35™” Softfeel™ (blue logo) ball. McNulty’s victory is the 31st international win for players using Callaway Golf® balls since the ball’s introduction in February of 2000.
McNulty’s sizzling 2001 play started with a top-10 finish at the Accenture Match Play Championship last week. At the South African Masters, the 47-year-old Zimbabwe native overcame a tough field and blustery conditions to earn a one-stroke victory. McNulty made up a three-stroke deficit over the final 13 holes to clinch the win.
“In the past, it would have been very difficult for me to predict how a golf ball would have reacted in such high winds,” said McNulty, who now has 49 career victories around the world. “But since I switched to the ‘Rule 35’ ball last year, I have complete confidence that my shots will hold their line in the wind, and hold the green once they land.”
McNulty also used 12 Callaway Golf clubs at the South African Masters, including an ERC™ Forged Titanium Driver, Big Bertha® Steelhead™ Fairway Woods and the new Steelhead X-14® Pro Series Irons. Last week, Pierre Fulke finished second at the Accenture Match Play Championship using an ERC Forged Titanium Driver.
Callaway Golf was also victorious on the LPGA Tour yesterday. The winner of the season-opening YourLife Vitamins LPGA Classic used a Callaway Golf titanium driver to shoot a final-round 64 and post her first victory since 1999. The winner also used Big Bertha Steelhead Fairway Woods and an Odyssey® White Hot™ 2 Putter in her four-stroke victory.
