CARLSBAD, CA., November 20, 2000 – Just weeks after Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY) introduced the new Big Bertha® ERC™ II Forged Titanium Driver, it has already been used to win an international tour event. The winner of the Dunlop Phoenix event in Miyazaki, Japan, used an ERC II Forged Titanium Driver to set a tournament scoring record and claim victory by four strokes.

The ERC II Forged Titanium Driver conforms to the Rules of Golf as published by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland. However, in the United States it can only be played in recreational rounds because of the USGA’s rule limiting so called “spring-like effect.” Callaway Golf’s new Big Bertha Hawk Eye® VFT™ Titanium Driver – which conforms to both R&A and USGA rules – has already won seven times on the world’s major professional tours.

The Dunlop Phoenix champion switched to the ERC II Forged Titanium Driver just prior to the event. He responded by shooting four rounds in the 60s and shattering the previous tournament scoring record by five strokes. In all, five golfers at the Japan Golf Tour event used ERC II Forged Titanium Drivers, while another 11 put ERC II Forged Titanium Drivers in play at the Johnnie Walker Classic in Thailand. Callaway Golf Staff Professional Paul Lawrie finished fourth at the event using an ERC II Forged Titanium Driver, while Odyssey Golf Staff Professional Michael Campbell finished third – including a course-record 63 in the third round – using a Hawk Eye VFT Titanium Driver.
