CARLSBAD, CA, May 22, 2000 - In a torrid stretch run on Sunday, Annika Sorenstam used her Odyssey® White Hot™ 2 Putter to birdie three of the final four holes and win the LPGA Firstar Classic. Sorenstam’s outstanding performance capped a two-victory weekend for putters made by Odyssey Golf, -a division of Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY), as the winner of the Virginia Beach Open on the Buy.com Tour used an Odyssey TriForce™ 3 Putter for his first career win.
Sorenstam was stellar in winning her 20th LPGA Tour event. Her bogey-free victory included rounds of 66-65-66. Sorenstam’s run of birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes during the final round was capped by a 15-foot putt on No. 17. Needing par to secure the victory, Sorenstam easily two-putted from 25 feet on No. 18.
“I made some great putts, especially on the last four holes,” said Sorenstam. “That’s a real confidence booster. I feel like I made my share of putts out there, and it’s always good to leave a golf course knowing you did that.”
Sorenstam has now won twice this year using her Odyssey White Hot 2 Putter - the same model that was used by the second-place finisher at the PGA European Tour Deutsche Bank SAP Open and by the third-place finisher at the Buy.Com Virginia Beach Open.
The winner of the Virginia Beach Open used his Odyssey TriForce 3 Putter to earn the first professional victory of his career. A key two-putt birdie from 50 feet on the 8th hole of the final round helped spur the winner to a five-stroke victory, the biggest on the tour this year.
On the Senior PGA Tour, Jim Colbert finished third at the TD Waterhouse Championship using his Odyssey Dual Force® Rossie® 2 Bronze Putter. In the first round, Colbert tied a senior scoring record with an 11-under-par 61, including an eagle on the first hole and a string of eight straight birdies on the last nine holes.
Through May 21, Odyssey Putters are the most-played putters on the world’s five major professional tours combined in 2000. According to the Darrell Survey Company and Sports Marketing Surveys, Ltd., 31 percent of all putters used on the PGA, Senior PGA, LPGA, BUY.COM and PGA European tours combined this year have been Odyssey Putters, compared with 22.6 percent for the nearest competitor.
