CARLSBAD, CA., April 2, 2001 – Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Jim Colbert and his partner teamed to successfully defend their title at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf yesterday. Colbert and his partner each used the Callaway Golf “Rule 35®” Firmfeel™ (red logo) ball in their three-stroke victory. The same ball model was also used by the second-place team of Callaway Golf Staff Professionals Bruce Fleisher and David Graham, giving the “Rule 35” Firmfeel model sole ownership of the top two spots on the event’s leaderboard.
All four members of the top two teams at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf – an unofficial event that is a mainstay on the Senior PGA Tour schedule – also used drivers, fairway woods, irons and putters made by Callaway Golf. Colbert, who recently won the SBC Senior Classic, used 13 Callaway Golf® clubs, including a Big Bertha® Hawk Eye® VFT™ Titanium Driver, Big Bertha Steelhead Plus™ 3-wood and 5-wood, Steelhead® X-14® Irons and an Odyssey® White Hot® 7 Putter. His partner used 11 Callaway Golf clubs, including a Hawk Eye VFT Pro Series Titanium Driver, Steelhead X-14 Pro Series Irons and an Odyssey White Hot 5 Putter. The duo combined for a 20-under-par 124 in the rain-shortened 36-hole best-ball event, including a 59 in the opening round.
Of the 20 players comprising the top 10 teams at this year’s Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, 12 relied upon the exceptional combination of distance and spin built into the “Rule 35” Firmfeel ball. The “Rule 35” ball was the #2 ball in play at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.
Drivers made by Callaway Golf also had success on the PGA Tour yesterday, as the winner of the BellSouth Classic used a Hawk Eye VFT Titanium Driver to capture his first title since 1997. The winner survived a gusty 36-hole final day, posting a driving distance average of 288.3 yards for the event. Callaway Golf Staff Professional Charles Howell finished tied for sixth at the event, his best PGA Tour finish of the season. Howell’s driving distance average for the event was 298 yards, and he earned $103,290 in the process. Howell used 11 Callaway Golf clubs at the BellSouth Classic, including a Hawk Eye VFT Pro Series Titanium Driver, a Steelhead Plus 4-wood, Steelhead X-14 Pro Series Irons and an Odyssey TriHot™ 3 Putter. Howell also used the “Rule 35” Firmfeel ball model. Overall, three of the top 10 finishers at the event used Hawk Eye VFT Titanium Drivers.
Overseas, the Big Bertha ERC™ II Forged Titanium Driver once again enjoyed its highest PGA European Tour usage numbers of the year. A total of 50 golfers used an ERC II at the Open de Argentina, up from 47 at last week’s Sao Paulo Brazilian Open. Of the 50 golfers to put an ERC II in Argentina, only two were Callaway Golf Staff Professionals – meaning that the other 48 chose to play the ERC II without financial incentive. For the year, the ERC II is the most-played single driver model on the PGA European Tour, and Callaway Golf is the most-played driver brand on the tour.
