Callaway Golf Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam Uses the New Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver to Earn Her 12th Win of 2002
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 2002--Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam won her 12th worldwide tournament of the year yesterday -- and her fourth since switching to the new Great Big Bertha(R) II Titanium Driver in September. Sorenstam's victory at the Mizuno Classic in Japan is her 10th LPGA Tour victory of 2002, making her the first golfer to win 10 times in a year on the tour since Carol Mann and Kathy Whitworth did so 34 years ago in 1968.
"I'm a little in shock I think," Sorenstam said after clinching her 41st career LPGA Tour victory. "I set high goals for myself, but sometimes you wonder if you can achieve them. Here I am and I've definitely achieved one of my goals. I feel like crying in a way, but I'm so happy that I feel like jumping high. It's wonderful."
Sorenstam shot 15-under-par 201 to win by two strokes at the Mizuno Classic and earn the ninth tour victory in 14 weeks for the hot new Great Big Bertha II Titanium Drivers. Her nearest competitor also played a Great Big Bertha II Titanium Driver -- which she had used to win the Cisco World Ladies Match Play Championship the previous week. Sorenstam used a total of 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs at the Mizuno Classic, including her Great Big Bertha II Pro Series Titanium Driver, Steelhead(R) X-14(R) Irons and an Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) "2-Ball" Putter. Sorenstam also used the HX(R) Red golf ball, giving Callaway Golf 13 ball wins on the LPGA Tour this year -- more than any other ball manufacturer.
Sorenstam continues to dominate the LPGA Tour on the course and on paper. She leads the tour in scoring average (68.69), money won ($2,648,904), top-10 finishes (19), greens in regulation (79.7 percent) and rounds under par (56 of 72). Sorenstam is also fourth in driving accuracy at 80.8 percent and fifth in driving distance at 265.6 yards. Her driving statistics are even more superb than last year, when Sorenstam won eight times and finished 15th in driving accuracy at 78.1 percent and 26th in driving distance at 252.3 yards. Sorenstam now has 41 LPGA Tour victories in her career and has won 12 of the 24 tournaments she's played this year.
